Our History

In 1985, Robert R. Berluti opened his law office with a handful of clients. Mr. Berluti positioned the firm to serve business owners and closely held private companies who did not get the attention they deserved from the area's large law firms. He built a practice winning over one client at a time, representing entrepreneurs, executives and family businesses. The firm became highly regarded for providing prompt, personalized, and excellent service and cost-effective legal solutions.

In 1988, Edward D. Kutchin and his former partner formed Kutchin & Rufo, P.C. For over 23 years, Kutchin & Rufo was known for forging close relationships with clients and becoming a value-added member of each client's team. This small yet sophisticated firm specialized in corporate law, complex commercial litigation, commercial finance, and real estate law and worked tirelessly to offer clients exceptional legal services in the most effective manner possible. Mr. Kutchin ingrained in the firm that integrity, diligence, and responsiveness to client needs were the fundamental principles by which Kutchin & Rufo operated.

In 1997, Mr. Berluti strengthened his firm's capabilities by forming a partnership with his former college roommate, John T. McLaughlin, an experienced business lawyer and counselor with a growing practice of his own. Mr. McLaughlin built his reputation on encouraging clients to take practical approaches to building a successful business with an emphasis on planning as the best tool to prepare for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

In January, 2011, Edward D. Kutchin, Robert R. Berluti and John T. McLaughlin joined together in recognition of their synergistic practices to form Berluti McLaughlin & Kutchin LLP (“BMK”). BMK continues the legacy achieved by each partner, providing sophisticated, value-oriented representation to entrepreneurs and businesses in matters including corporate, real estate, commercial finance and complex civil litigation at both the trial and appellate level and all forms of alternative dispute resolution.
